Tarot FAQs

How does the tarot work?

Each card contains deep meaning, and in combination, those meanings get even deeper. But the cards are meaningless on their own. It is the interaction of cards, reader, and client which activates the tarot. You are more likely to have a successful reading with a reader you are comfortable engaging with, so shop around till you have found a reader you are excited about.

How accurate is a tarot reading?

Sometimes a tarot reading is very, very specific. At other times the meanings of the cards do not emerge immediately. That's why it's important to have a few months between tarot readings. Sometimes clients want to ask questions that can be answered yes/no. But the tarot speaks to us about our need to grow, not just what we want, so remember that overly-directive questions can limit your tarot reading.

Is tarot fortune-telling?

Tarot is divination, which is slightly different. Divination means re-aligning with your highest, or divine, purpose – it's not really about knowing what's going to happen next but about deciding what is the best path to take through the challenges you face.

Why does tarot make me feel nervous?

Tarot shows people their path. You may be frightened of making the changes you need to make in your life. Let's face it, change is scary! Some people are afraid of the 'Death' card, which isn't surprising when you consider the meaning of the card is all about change. It's difficult for us – but the tarot is brilliant at helping us navigate change, so why not get a reading?

What tarot deck do you use for readings?

The deck I use most is the Rider-Waite-Smith deck. Clients tend to choose this deck both because it is distant from us in its history, and the figures in it are from another time as well – this allows the symbolism to emerge. However, I always offer a more modern selection of decks to clients, who may not see themselves represented in the older tarot decks.

What should I get out of a tarot reading?

Sometimes we dwell on the past, which can't be undone. Sometimes our problems blind us to the solutions. Sometimes we worry about the future so much we forget to live today. A good tarot reading will give you a sense of where your challenges are coming from, the energies you are working with now, and how you might get where you need to be. Getting that sense of perspective – seeing yourself on a path from the past, through the present, and into the future – is really important.

Why do you charge £50 for 60 minutes?

Because this is my job, this is my work, and this rate compares to similar healing professions. But there's another reason –quality. This is your life we are going to be talking about. You can get a cheap as chips reading – but why would you? You deserve an experienced and professionally trained reader, with a proven track record. And ask yourself, why are some people giving tarot readings away? Is it because they are offering really good readings? Have a think about the logic of that. For the standard of tarot reading I offer, £50 is very good value, and my clients will attest to that.

What happens in a tarot reading?

First, there is a chat about the purpose of the reading. You may wish to put things in context, or not. If you do, the reading will be more focused. If you don't, the tarot will tell you what you need to focus on – which can be challenging, especially if you have other ideas! But the tarot goes where the tarot goes. We will also choose a deck of cards, and I will shuffle them, and when ready, lay them out in a spread. I will give you an overview of what the cards are saying first of all, and then work through the different layers of meaning in the spread. The advice emerging from the reading will come across gradually, so you may wish to make notes, which is fine. You can ask questions at any point. Once we have covered the cards in depth, we will rearrange them to help you focus on the 'what next' of it all.

Will he/she/they be coming back?

Sorry my dear, but needing to ask a question like this gives you your own answer. Heartbreak is painful, but it is best to avoid getting stuck in the past. Maybe it's time to heal and move on? And a great way to do that is to get a tarot reading to refocus yourself on what you are about, and what you need to do, to live your life to the fullest.
